Pest Description

  • Dark gray
  • Two dark stripes on thorax with diffuse marks
  • Extended piercing proboscis
  • 4 to 5 mm long


Life Cycle

  • Complete life cycle takes 10 to 21 days
  • Adults spend their entire lives on cattle
  • Female lays up to 500 small, reddish brown eggs on fresh manure
  • Eggs hatch into maggots and mature to pupa


Food Source

  • Feed on the blood of cattle; live on or around the shoulders and backs of cattle, moving to the belly on hot days or in rain storms


Threat

  • Can result in production losses caused by anemia, reduced weight gain, and a general weakening of the animals
