Pest Description
- Dark gray
- Two dark stripes on thorax with diffuse marks
- Extended piercing proboscis
- 4 to 5 mm long
Life Cycle
- Complete life cycle takes 10 to 21 days
- Adults spend their entire lives on cattle
- Female lays up to 500 small, reddish brown eggs on fresh manure
- Eggs hatch into maggots and mature to pupa
Food Source
- Feed on the blood of cattle; live on or around the shoulders and backs of cattle, moving to the belly on hot days or in rain storms
Threat
- Can result in production losses caused by anemia, reduced weight gain, and a general weakening of the animals
