Lice
Pest Description
- Yellow to rusty brown
- 1 to 6 mm long
- Wingless
- Flat bodied
- Sucking lice: pointed, narrow heads
- Biting lice: heads larger than the thorax
Life Cycle
- Complete life cycle takes 2 to 3 weeks
- Live in colonies, moving from host to host through contact, walls, bedding, etc.
- Females generally lay about one egg per day
- Eggs are glued to hairs on host animal and hatch in about two weeks
Food Source
- Sucking lice feed on blood of the host animal; biting lice feed on dead skin and dried blood on the host
Threat
- Irritation can result in weight loss, weakness and resulting susceptibility to other disease threats; damage to facilities
