- 4 life stages: egg, larvae, nymph and adult
Soft Ticks
- Pear-shaped; no plate
- Head on underside of body
- Life stages indistinguishable
Life Cycle
Depending on the species of tick:
- Entire life cycle may take from weeks to years
- One female tick can lay up to 3,000 eggs
- Can move from host to host with each life stage, or spend its entire life on one host
Food Source
- All ticks feed on blood of the host animal; hosts vary, including cattle, dogs, humans, birds, etc.
Threat
- Can transmit a wide variety of pathogens, including Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tick fever
